There is something magical about the start of the school year. Kids are excited. Educators are hopeful. Classrooms are beautiful. The overall campus vibe is optimistic and upbeat. LAUSD officially kicked off the school year last week. During the first days of school I visited each of our English classrooms to cheer on and support our students and teachers. I know that teaching can be an isolating profession at times. Educators may go an entire day - or more - without another adult in their space which means they’re not getting feedback on their teaching. Even the smallest affirmation, reflective question, or food for thought helps a teacher grow their practice, feel connected, and know they’re valued. At the end of each of my class visits, I left an affirming note on an index card for each teacher. Before we dive deep into one-on-one coaching cycles, preparing for lessons and analyzing student work, I wanted to share a small reminder that I see their hard work and am excited for what’s to come. May this be the best school year for all of our students and educators.
