Geneviève’s Impact Over the Years
Geneviève has dedicated nearly three decades to achieving educational equity because she strongly believes in the power of educators to change students’ lives and in the importance of strategic, equity-focused systems to ensure change is possible. She has led this work across classrooms, schools, districts, charter networks, nonprofits, and national education policy spaces. Below are a few examples of her work over the years.
Black Teacher Project Board of Trustees
Geneviève joined Dr. Micia Mosely, Dr. Travis Bristol and others as members of the Black Teacher Project Board of Trustees. They work together to ensure that every student benefits from the diversity, excellence, and leadership of an empowered Black teaching force.
Engaging Adolescent Readers at SXSW Edu
Geneviève participated in a live recording of the SERP Stories podcast on the SXSW Edu stage. The podcast illuminated a missing strand in the Science of Reading: engagement. She joined researchers Dr. Margaret Troyer and Dr. Kayla Jones to discuss how to center motivation, identity, and agency alongside rigor to re-engage adolescent readers.
Published Author: Integrating Students’ Lived Experiences within Classroom Practice
Geneviève’s chapter in the 2023 book From Being Woke to Doing #theWork: Using Culturally Relevant Practices to Support Student Achievement & Sociopolitical Consciousness is entitled “What Does It Mean to Be a Scholar Activist?: Integrating Students’ Lived Experiences and Communities within Classroom Practice.” It shares a process teachers can use to ensure students’ lives are integrated into the curriculum.
Book Talk with Dr. Bettina Love
Geneviève joined Professor Bettina Love at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture to discuss her book We Want to Do More Than Survive: Abolitionist Teaching and the Pursuit of Educational Freedom.
UCLA School of Education Graduation Speaker
Geneviève was invited to address the audience of UCLA’s School of Education and Information Studies graduation. She reminded the audience to have hope, build community and take action.
U.S. Department of Education Teaching Ambassador Fellow
Geneviève served in the U.S. Department of Education as a Teaching Ambassador Fellow in the Office of Secretary Arne Duncan where she contributed to national education policies to strengthen the teaching profession and student engagement.
Featured Teacher in “The First Year” Documentary
As a first year teacher, Geneviève was featured in Academy Award‐winning director Davis Guggenheim’s documentaries “The First Year” and “Teach.” Both films were used to inform national teacher recruitment, training, and retention.
A Talk to Teachers
Geneviève was a featured speaker at the National Board Council of New York’s Teacher Leadership Summit. Her TED Talk-inspired remarks focused on the challenges of returning to the classroom after three years of federal education policy work.
Teaching Channel Laureate
As a Teaching Channel Laureate, Geneviève was one of nine teachers selected nationwide by the Teaching Channel to demonstrate how to improve teaching practice to 750,000 teachers, through videos, blogs, and newsletters.
Exploring Teacher Quality in High-Need Schools
Geneviève joined educators Jeffrey Garrett and Dr. Manuel Rustin on an episode of “All of the Above” to discuss how we ensure our best teachers get placed where they are needed most.
